I love my dog and other dogs, however, when dogs bite and attack people, they cause serious injuries. Under Massachusetts law, the owner or keeper of the dog is strictly liable for the injuries they cause. This means you do not have to show that the owner/keeper were negligent in anyway. The fact that the dog attacked you or a loved one is all you need to show to be entitled to damages.

The owner/keeper can try to defend against your claim by alleging you were teasing, tormenting or even trespassing at the time of your injury. If you are attacked by a dog, you should do the following:

1. Call 911 and seek medical attention if it's an emergency;

2. Take pictures of the area, the dog, your injury, and all witnesses to the incident;

3. Gather names and contact information of all witnesses;

4. Find out if the dog is up-to-date on it's rabies shots; and

5. Report the incident to Animal Control or the Police.
